It's always fun to speak to groups outside my usual sphere of influence. This weekend was a great example: professional speakers and professional engineers, rather than lawyers.
On Friday, I went to Oakbrook, Illinois, to lead two discussions groups on "Copyright, Contracts and Writing" at the Chicago Chapter of the National Speakers Association. (see previous post). You might imagine that there's no lag in the conversation when you're with a group of people who make their living as professional speakers.
On Saturday, Rich Beem, a Chicago patent lawyer, and I conducted an afternoon seminar in Rosemont, Illinois, for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers on "Intellectual Property and Career and Business Protection." We spoke to a group of engineers split evenly between entrapreneurs and independent contractors on one hand and in-house engineers on the other. An interesting and incredibly intelligent group. We provided a primer on IP rights and strategies for turning their intellectual creations into valuable and protectable property.
