The Fifteen Percent Solution to Trademark Infringement

It's important to learn something new every day. Here's mine for the day from an article in the Whitter Daily News:

The firefighters researched trademark law and learned that if the image is altered at least 15 percent, it is not considered a trademark infringement.

I've been at this over 20 years, and this is the first time I've hear the 15 percent rule in trademark law. Sure makes things easy!

The story involves T-shirts sold by firefighters in Whitter, California, featuring a logo admittedly similar to the Quaker Oats man.
