I'd like to welcome my students to the Fall 2004 John Marshall Law School LLM Trademark Law class.  I look forward to sharing my Monday evenings for the next several months with you.

I've been teaching in the John Marshall LLM intellectual property program as an adjunct professor since the late 1980s.  It's a privilege to be part of one of the best IP programs in the country. If you'd like to see what we plan to cover this Fall, see the syllabus at GuidingRights.com (student page).

This year we have a great mix of students: practicing attorneys, advanced third year students and visiting foreign attorneys, including several members of the State IP Office of China.

In our Monday night introduction, the topic that generated the most discussion was fair use for the purpose of parody or satire. A timely supplement to that discussion are the postings by Judge Richard Posner for the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit as guest blogger on Larry Lessig's web site. His comments on parody and satire are particular helpful and to the point.  See "More on Fair Use, with a Note on Patents."
